Why not just hire a lawyer?

Posted by kudzujungle on April 29, 2026 at 12:15 am

A: We tried several times, but we don’t have upfront money to cover the expenses.

The cases we’re dealing with involve large, well-funded institutional defendants with legal teams (three law firms at the time of this post, and 8 lawyers). Contingency fee attorneys — the ones who take cases without upfront payment in exchange for a percentage of any recovery — do a cost-benefit calculation before taking a case. When the defense has resources and the path to recovery is long and uncertain, many attorneys walk away.

That left us with a choice: give up, or figure it out ourselves.

We chose to figure it out ourselves.

Pro se — representing yourself — is a legal right in the United States. T he courts are designed to be navigable without an attorney, although, it sure looks like laws are written so you have to hire a lawyer! It’s harder to navigate a complex case without a lawyer, and the learning curve is steep. But it’s real, it’s legitimate, and it’s what we’re doing.

We’re not recommending this path to anyone. We’re just documenting our path and sharing what we are learning, how we are being treated, and what we are doing to keep going.
