How do you keep everything organized?

A: The short answer is: carefully, and with as many free tools as possible.

We cover our full toolkit in the Pro Se Journey diary, but the short version includes PACER, required for District Court filings. The Appellate Court also allows digital filings through PACER, but only if you are a lawyer. Pro se litigants have to mail documents, or file via email after they scan a real signature and turn the document into a flat pdf file.

We have our own local system set up, using a lap top. We also use this Kudzu Jungle site to manage projects. We use the free LibreOffice to create the documents we file, and then export as pdf to upload to the court’s efile system.

We use LifterLMS to create our Pro Se Journey, a diary and learning system, and that’s how we detail the rest of the tools we use and how we keep up with the several case, eight lawyers filing in opposition of us, and how we manage the bigger picture.

The organizational system matters as much as the legal strategy. A pro se litigant who can’t find their documents or reconstruct their timeline is at a serious disadvantage. We don’t want to be, and cannot be unorganized.

The diary walks through exactly how we set up our system — what worked, what didn’t, and what we do to correct mistakes.
