How do you handle privacy — yours and other people’s?
A: Carefully, and with an ongoing awareness that we are operating in the public record.
Court filings are public documents, with the exception of sealed documents. What we file can be found by anyone with a PACER account or access to the relevant court’s online system. We don’t hide from that — it’s part of why we document publicly. The public record is a form of accountability.
For members of this community who share their own stories: we don’t publish personal information without explicit permission. The community is a space for people to share as much or as little as they choose. If you post something you later change your mind about, you can delete it.
Members can use first names only, or user names rather than their true identity. We have a privacy policy that you agreed to when signing up, and we disclosed how we use your identity (that is, to process payments you agree to).
For the cases we manage: we document what’s in the public record and are thoughtful about anything that isn’t. We have to follow the same rules lawyers have to follow even though we are pro se. We can’t share sealed information. We are also very respectful when we discuss our cases and other parties, including the court parties.
